Privacy Policy
The short version: the Fitzpatrick skin type test runs entirely in your browser, we never ask for your name or email, we do not store or sell your data, and the only analytics that run for everyone are cookieless. This page explains exactly what happens when you use the site.
This privacy policy covers fitzpatrickskintype.com (the "site"), which is owned and run by the publisher behind Fitzpatrick Skin Type. We built this site to do one simple thing well, help you find your Fitzpatrick skin type and choose sun care that fits it, and we have kept the data side just as simple. If you have any question after reading this, email us at [email protected].
The skin type quiz: nothing is stored or sent
The Fitzpatrick skin type test is a piece of code that runs in your own browser. When you answer the eight questions, the math that turns your answers into a result, Type I through Type VI, happens on your device. Your answers are not transmitted to us, not written to a database, and not saved to any server.
Because the result is worked out locally, there is also nothing to retrieve later. We do not create a profile for you, we do not link your answers to your identity, and there is no "your saved results" page, because we never had the answers in the first place. Close the tab and the answers are gone. We require no name, no email, and no account to show you your result.
Analytics: cookieless by default, for everyone
To understand how many people visit the site and which pages are useful, we use one privacy-friendly, cookieless tool that runs for every visitor. It does not set advertising cookies, fingerprint your device, or collect anything that identifies you personally.
- Our own visitor beacon. A small script on each page sends an anonymous page-view signal so we can see basic traffic totals on our own dashboard. It uses a random, daily-rotating identifier kept in your browser to avoid double-counting the same browser on the same day, and it reduces any referring website to a bare hostname, so search terms and full URLs are never sent. It does not set cookies, does not collect personal data, and does not follow you elsewhere.
This measurement is essential to running the site and stays on for everyone. It cannot identify you as an individual.
Optional Google Analytics, with consent in the EU, UK, and Switzerland
We also use Google Analytics 4 to better understand how the site performs, for example which pages people read and how quickly pages load. Google Analytics is the one piece of measurement on this site that can use cookies, so we treat it as optional and gate it by location:
- If you are in the EU, the UK, or Switzerland, Google Analytics does not load until you agree. A small banner appears at the bottom of the page explaining that Google Analytics is optional, with Accept and Decline buttons. If you choose Decline, Google Analytics is never loaded. If you choose Accept, your choice is remembered in your browser so you are not asked again. The essential, cookieless analytics described above stay on either way.
- If you are anywhere else, no banner is shown, and Google Analytics may load. Even then, it only loads after you actually interact with the page (a scroll, tap, or click), so a visitor who reads nothing and leaves never triggers it. We also enable IP anonymization in Google Analytics.
Your region is detected on Cloudflare's side from the connection, so this gating does not require any extra third-party service. You can clear the remembered choice at any time by clearing this site's data in your browser settings, which will make the banner appear again on your next visit if you are in a region that shows it. For more on how Google handles data, see Google's own privacy policy.
Affiliate links and the Amazon Associates program
Some of our buying guides and type pages include links to products on Amazon. These are affiliate links, which means that if you click one and go on to buy something, we may earn a small commission, at no extra cost to you. We are a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program. We choose every recommendation based on what fits a given skin type, not on what pays the most.
When you click an affiliate link, you leave our site and go to Amazon, and from that point Amazon's own privacy policy and cookies apply, not ours. Amazon may use cookies or similar technology to credit a purchase to our account and to run its own service. We do not receive your name, your payment details, or a list of what you bought, only anonymous, aggregate reporting about commissions. If you would rather not use an affiliate link, you can always search for the same product directly on Amazon instead.
Email you send us
If you email [email protected], we receive your message and your email address so we can reply. We use that information only to respond to you. We do not add you to a mailing list, and there is no newsletter to subscribe to, because we do not run one.
We do not sell your data
We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information to anyone, for any purpose. We have no incentive to, because we collect so little of it. The only third parties involved are the infrastructure and measurement providers named above (Cloudflare and Google) and Amazon when you choose to follow an affiliate link, each acting under its own privacy policy.
Children
This site is intended for a general audience and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. Since the site does not collect personal information through normal use, this is mostly a formality, but if you believe a child has sent us personal information by email, contact us and we will delete it.
Your choices and rights
Because we hold so little, exercising your privacy choices on this site is mostly about your own browser:
- You can refuse or later revoke Google Analytics by declining the consent banner, or by clearing this site's stored data so the banner reappears.
- You can block or delete cookies and local storage for this site at any time in your browser settings. The quiz and the cookieless analytics will still work.
- You can avoid affiliate cookies entirely by not clicking the Amazon links and searching for products directly instead.
- If you have emailed us and want your message and email address deleted from our inbox, just ask at [email protected].
Changes to this policy
If we change how the site handles data, we will update this page and change the "last updated" date at the top. Because the site is deliberately light on data, we expect changes to be rare. Continuing to use the site after an update means you accept the revised policy.
Questions about your privacy?
Email [email protected] and we will get back to you. For a reminder of how the test itself works, see how to find your skin type or just take the test, no data required.
